The rule of thumb in moving is to start planning at least two months ahead of your move date. Below is a checklist that will help keep your move as stress-free as possible.

8 Weeks before…..

  • Take inventory of all household goods and decide what you want to keep or get rid of
This includes deciding which financial papers you need to keep or have shredded
  • Create files for all moving papers and receipts. If you are moving at least 50 miles for work purposes and your employer is not covering your costs, your expenses may be tax deductible
  • If you plan to use a moving company, obtain estimates and select a mover
  • Create a separate file for important financial documents you may need for a new mortgage or switching bank accounts, such as W2’s, tax returns and bank statements
  • Contact your insurance agent to determine if your belongings are covered during the move under your homeowners policy
  • Arrange to transfer school records if you have children

6 Weeks before…..

  • Change your address with postal services (www.usps.com/moversguide/welcome.htm)

  • Reserve a truck if you are moving on your own
  • Start packing. Pack items that you will not need until after your move.

  • Gather personal papers that you will need access to at your new location (medical/dental, school and financial records, birth certificates, etc.) and move them yourself
  • Make necessary travel plans and hotel/motel reservations
  • Arrange special transportation for plants and any fragile or valuable items.
  • Dispose of perishable or hazardous items that cannot be moved, such as propane tanks. Many regions also prohibit the transport of opened paint cans. Consider leaving these behind or drying them out with kitty litter
